"Bei mir bist du schön!" ... Henry Jacques & his Correct Dance Tempo Orchestra (1938)
Please activate the HD function(1080/720p) before watching the video or watch it with a larger type player (in 480p)"Bei mir bist du schön" was written by Sholom Secunda for the 1932 Yiddish operetta "Men Ken Lebn Nor Men Lost Nisht" (which became "I would if I could" in English. In 1937 lyricist Sammy Cahn heard the song being performed in a club in Harlem and convinced his employer to buy the rights. Together with Saul Chaplin he rewrote the song in English and made some changes to the rhythm. Then the Andrew Sisters - who were just starting out - recorded the song which became one of their signature tunes and an enormous success. Subsequently "Bei mir bist du schön" was recorded by many artists and in many languages....The band featured in today's video is rather unknown these days. In fact, Henry Jacques was not a bandleader but a champion dancer who had his own band in the late 1930s. It was a so-called "strict tempo" band similar to the Victor Silvester orchestra (Silvester was a dancer as well before becoming bandleader). It is generally believed that another bandleader oversaw the recording sessions while Jacques took care of the dance tempo aspect....The video takes the title literally : it shows publicity for beauty products as well as fashion taken from magazines from the late 1930s...About the record :His Master's VoiceB.D. 5336 / OEA 6093London, 1938This record is in bad condition. This record was recorded with an Nagaoka MP10 cartridge with 4mm 78rpm stylus as well as 78rpm phono preamp.
