Adrian Rollini "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" (1938)
Bei Mir Bist Du Schön" ("Sheyn")Music and Original Lyrics: Sholom Secunda and Jacob JacobsEnglish Lyrics by Sammy Cahn and Saul ChaplinPerformed by Adrian Rollini QuintetRecorded January 18, 1938, New YorkPersonnel:Bobby Hackett - trumpetFrank Victor - guitarHarry Clark - string bassBuddy Rich - drumsAdrian Rollini - vibraphoneVocal - Sonny Schuyler (aka Sunny Skylar)The melody was originally written by New York composer Sholom Secunda in 1932 for a Yiddish musical comedy "I Would if I Could". The Yiddish words were written by Jacob Jacobs. J.J. Kammen Music Publishers asked Secunda to sell them his copyright, which he did for the sum of $30. A few years later, Sammy Cahn heard the Yiddish version performed and envisioned a swing version with English lyrics. Harms Music Publisher purchased the rights and published the English version with the now familiar lyrics of Sammy Cahn and Saul Chaplin. The Andrews Sisters recorded it on November 24, 1937 and it became their first successful hit, and a Gold Record, the first ever to a female vocal group. Fortunately for Secunda, he was able to receive a share of the royalties
