The Yiddish words were written by Jacob Jacobs. J.J. Kammen Music Publishers asked Secunda to sell them his copyright, which he did for the sum of $30. A few years later, Sammy Cahn heard the Yiddish version performed and envisioned a swing version with English lyrics. Harms Music Publisher purchased the rights and published the English version with the now familiar lyrics of Sammy Cahn and Saul Chaplin.
