KING CRIMSON - USA (Full Album 1975) (VINYL)
Atlantic RecordsSC 18136Released May 1975SIDE ONE1. Lark's Tongue's Is Aspic, Part II 7.032. Lament 4.123. Exiles 7.12SIDE TWO4. Asbury Park 7.125. Easy Money 6.356. 21st Century Schizoid Man 8.26This album was record in the summer of 1974 on Crimson's US tour. According to the Wikipedia article, most of it is from a show in Asbury Park, NJ on June 28th, except for "21st Century Schizoid Man" which was recorded on June 30th in Providence, RI. I take this and all other assertions in the Wiki article with a grain of salt as there are no citations in support of them, but they may well be correct, I relay them here.Minutiae:1. "Asbury Park" was clearly recorded at the Asbury Park show -- Robert Fripp's procedure in cases where they put a live improvisational piece on an album was to title it simply with where it was recorded, they did with "Providence" on the album Red, the track having been recorded live at the June 30th show in Providence.2.. The Wiki article lists a brief first track as "No Pussyfooting." This isn't listed on the album, so I've omitted it. Even more to the point, it's so brief and at such low volume that is doesn't merit mention. In the 40th anniversary edition, with bonus tracks and all that, "No Pussyfooting" is more fleshed out.3. Note the notch on the lower left spine. This is another one from the cut-out bin.Robert Fripp: Guitar, mellotronJohn Wetton: Bass, vocalsBill Bruford: Drums, percussionDavid Cross: Violin, keyboardsIn addition there was some studio overdubbing added: Violin on "Lark's Tongues" and "Schizoid Man" and piano on "Lament," all byEddie JobsonThe final output from the Fripp/Wetton/Bruford incarnation of King Crimson, the lineup that I've always enjoyed the most. USA I find highly listenable, with a couple of things worth noting.John Wetton's voice on this album sounds badly strained. Assuming that these tracks are from June 1974, the band by then was in the thick of a grueling tour, so Wetton's vocal strain isn't surprising. The choice of material to me is a little baffling. With the entire US tour to choose from, presumably (30-something concerts), the inclusion of this version of "Schizoid Man" puzzles me -- it's not one of their best. And there has to be a version of Lament where Wetton isn't so ragged vocally. But, those little quibbles aside, I love this album, and love it a little more so given that it was the sendoff to Crimson's most powerful lineup. The video portion consists of my little remixes of classic silent horror/sci-fi movies. Metropolis, The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari, The Phantom Carriage, among others.Enjoy another labor of vinyl love. Thank you, as always for watching/listening
