Полная версияThe vocal range of Russell Allen
I've been studying Russell Allen's voice and singing for years now, and to this day, he continues to amaze me. Great tone, incredible power, and amazing technique are all key components of just about any given song he sings on, whether it's with Symphony X, Adrenaline Mob, Star One, Allen/Lande, or his solo project, Atomic Soul. What's surprising, though, is that unlike a lot of metal singers, he hardly ever goes above F5. He seems comfortable enough all the way through his range, and he has some of the strongest/best D5s and E♭5s of any singer I know, so I'm inclined to believe that he restrains himself from going higher to just keep his singing tasteful, rather than flaunting the full extent of his high range in every song, like someone along the lines of Mark Slaughter. Moreover, Allen also often dodges opportunities to sing low, and only occasionally sings lower than his mid register...however, when he does go low, he proves that he also has quite an extensive range down there too. All in all, he's clearly mastered singing between A2 and F5, and though notes outside of those pitches aren't so common, it sounds like he has a lot more potential with his range than he's shown us so far.1. 0:00 - A verse from one of Symphony X's better-known songs, "Of Sins And Shadows", where Allen sings up to some very easy B4s.2. 0:20 - A gorgeously sustained B4 from "Lady Of The Snow", followed by a sung one in the melody as well.3. 0:38 - An amazing sustained C5 from "Wicked", with a quick run up to E♭5 and down to F4. Another easy sung C5 follows shortly after this.4. 0:56 - A dark passage from the doomy "It All Ends Here", where Allen sings up to a great C5.5. 1:04 - Strong C♯5s from "Incantations Of The Apprentice". He makes these notes sound so easy!6. 1:29 - The climactic key change from the last chorus of "The Sacrifice", topping at some amazing C♯5s and C5s.7. 1:55 - Some melody singing up to D5 before hitting a powerful sustained note at that pitch as well, from "Set The World On Fire (The Lie Of Lies)".8. 2:09 - Melody lines sung at D5 from "The Walls Of Babylon!"9. 2:20 - Some beautiful singing from C5 up to an amazing E♭5 from the verse of "The Eyes Of Medusa", shortly followed by a venomously strong C♯5 on the chorus.10. 2:44 - Fantastic C♯5s and a godly E♭5 from the ending of "The Edge Of Forever". One of my favorite notes by Allen ever.11. 3:05 - A few effortless C5s and then some wild E5s from a Star One cover of "Knife Edge", originally by Emerson, Lake & Palmer.12. 3:17 - Excellent E5s from "Through The Looking Glass", along with a handful of D5s and C5s.13. 3:29 - Some powerful gritty F5s from a cover of "Romeo Delight", originally by Van Halen.14. 3:44 - A clip from Adrenaline Mob's cover of "Barracuda" (originally by Heart), where Allen sings a clean F5, several D5s, and a strong E5 as well!15. 4:06 - A short F5 from "Romeo Delight".16. 4:16 - Russell's highest note: a clean belted F♯5 from the end of the same song!17. 4:27 - A short G♯4 scream from "Of Sins And Shadows" live in Montreal 2012.18. 4:33 - A solid B2 and C3 from "Awakenings".19. 4:44 - Some very pleasant B2 singing from "The Sacrifice".20. 5:07 - Solid melody singing down to B♭2 from Adrenaline Mob's cover of "Come Undone", originally by Duran Duran.21. 5:22 - A passage from "The Edge Of Forever" with some very good singing down to A2. This clip showcases Allen's tone for lows very well, in my opinion.22. 5:44 - Some live singing from the opening verse of "Isis And Osiris", bottoming at A2.23. 6:05 - The first of several choir vocal clips in this video: a couple lines from the intro of "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy", where the bass voice sings down to a solid G♯2.24. 6:18 - Several good G♯2s from the choir vocals in "Death Of Balance/Lacrymosa".25. 6:30 - One last choir vocal clip, again from "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy". This time, the bass voice sings down to F2 and then ends on a sustained G2!26. 6:49 - Allen's lowest singing to date: a passage from "Undaunted", where he basically raps his way down to several A2s and F2s, and touches on one short D2.27. 7:00 - A clip from the "Inferno (Unleash The Fire)" demo with a few weird scatted F2s, followed by a really low spoken bit that gets down to B1, and ends on a sustained G♯1 in vocal fry.28. 7:11 - A spoken passage from "King Of Terrors", where Allen hits a number of strong notes in the B1 area, and then slides down to a short A1 towards the end.29. 7:26 - And now for Allen's overall lowest: another spoken passage, this time from "Unjustified", with numerous C2s, some B♭1s, and a few short A1s and G♯1s.
