Super Legend HP, 180 HP Titan Aircraft engine now available from American Legend.
http://www.mountvernonaviationexpo.com – Super Duper Legend Cub with 180 Horses! By Dan JohnsonI've covered the Super Legend before, which had the multi-fuel, electronic ignition 115-horsepower Lycoming O-235 installed. Certainly that was and remains a solid powerplant but now the company has added a Titan engine that pulls like a team of stallions. Before Sun 'n Fun 2015, the Sulphur Springs, Texas company announced they had added, "a host of new features for our Super Legend, adding functionality, comfort and safety to the lineage of Legend Cub aircraft. Standard and optionally available, these features range from advanced carbon fiber components, including the company's new carbon fiber amphibious floats, to the latest in NextGen and touchscreen electronic flight displays."Super Legend HP, the new top-of-the-line model for American Legend's stable of Cub aircraft, was introduced at the Lakeland, Florida event featuring a 180-horsepower Titan O-340 engine. Get this: Super Legend HP can leave the ground in a mere 35 feet and climb at 2,000 feet per minute, according to American Legend. The HP model can clear a 50-foot obstacle in 200 feet, said the company adding, "The Titan O-340 offers fast cruise speeds of up to 104 mph TAS at 2150 rpm.""The four-cylinder, 340-cc Titan engine is a stroked derivative of the Lycoming O-320. It weighs 245 pounds, which is 20 pounds less than the similar O-360," reported American Legend. The HP derivation is an upgrade of the Super Legend that was introduced in 2011. With more carbon-fiber components and expanded avionics options Super Legend HP is available as an LSA, with certain restrictions to comply with the rules, or as an experimental kit airplane. To qualify as a Special LSA, Super Legend HP has a maximum takeoff power limitation of five minutes with continuous cruise operations limited to 80 horsepower. This procedure is used by other LSA that employ high-powered engines. For the SLSA model, American Legend uses a special lightweight custom paint and avionics packages to assure Super Legend HP weight stays under SLSA certification rules of 904 pounds. However, the company noted, "Super Legend's strength-tested airframe, up to 1,750 pounds." When sold as an Experimental, the same airframe may use the higher gross weight." To benefit from a higher useful load that comes with the increased gross weight, buyers will need a Medical and will build their own airplane.A very familiar supplier to the LSA community, American Legend is a leader in a crowded Cub market. Over a decade, the Texas outfit has built well-regarded product support for its line of Legend Cub aircraft. Launched as the SP/LSA rule was introduced by FAA, American Legend has firmly established itself as one of the most successful manufacturers in the space. "We have built a reputation among our Legend Cub owners and operators, guest pilots, passengers, and within the industry for designing aircraft that are true to the Cub form yet are modern, competitively priced, and built to last," stated the company.Beside the open-cowl original and offering several engine choices, you can buy Legend Cubs in ready-to-fly or kit form plus you can choose AmphibCub.American Legend recently completed certification of its own Kevlar and carbon fiber LF1500A amphibious float design. Purpose-built for the Super Legend, the company's amphib floats use a manual gear mechanism that also offer watertight storage compartments.http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. Lou’s FBO has been in business for 65 years. This year at Sun in Fun Lou introduced his Bristell Share Program which will enable pilots to finance a Bristell. The Bristell is mechanic and flight school owner friendly. With low maintenance costs due to:Stainless steel firewall plus engine set forward to allow easy A&P access.US made tires and tubes allow any maintenance shop to change a tire. All USA AN hardware, readily available from any US aviation parts distributor.Empenage access panels allow easy access to elevator trim servos. The Bristell’s engine thermostat assures even engine temperatures. The choice of TruTrak EFIS & Autopilot and G796 assures dependability.Water tight wing lockers keep the wing dry and prevent water corrosion. The Bristell has an empty weight of 750 pounds which is 100 pounds less than the it's major competitors. The low empty weight results in better climb performance and allows student training at power settings that result in a fuel burn of 2.8 gallons per hour.Cabin.The canopy composite sun shade provides rollover protection.Wings attach outboard of the step area with large bolts.Cabin width of 51 inches and adjustable rudder pedals yield extreme cabin comfort. If you are 6” 8” and weigh 270 pounds….the Bristell is the only LSA you should consider.Warm cabin heat with canopy demister (defroster) is standard and is an important feature. The canopy design, with the composite sun shade area on the top, provides extra rollover protection and helps keep the cabin cool on a hot day.Push rod controls are encased in a protective canvas to prevent any accidental jamming of flight controls by small objects and also a must have for safety reasons. The Bristell main spar extends beyond the wing step area for added strength.Comfortable bucket seats with four point harness. The rudder pedals move forward and back 6 inches. The three bladed prop has great ground clearance.Behind the seats are enclosed allowing cushions to be placed behind the seat, so short pilots can enjoy the bucket seat contour against his or her back and great visibility over the nose.http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. Truly affordable aircraft can be found in Part 103 ultralights but fine as some of these are, their appeal is also limited, for example, most are open cockpit designs.A void in the availability of a dependable 40-60 horsepower four-stroke aircraft engine may be one reason we see few PSA. Some development of new four-stroke engines is occurring but the ones I've examined are heavier and provide less power than popular two-stroke engines. How about electric power? — What works with electric propulsion today are low drag, lightweight aircraft that do not require much power to fly. A PSA is nearly perfect in definition. Heavier two-seat aircraft cannot offer the endurance, instilling "range anxiety," and are still too expensive. Until battery energy capacity increases significantly electric power may be limited to PSA.My personal experience with electric power shows it can be ideal if:- the aircraft can carry enough battery to fly for an hour (hard to do while meeting Part 103)- the motor can provide enough power at low RPM (to reduce prop noise closer to electric motor noise)The entire system can be designed and integrated for safe operationI have been researching electric power, a technology with huge potential, and I believe a PSA is the perfect place to start. A new electric motor I am developing is designed specifically for aircraft use meaning it has high torque, low RPM, light weight and high reliability.Concurrently a new battery system I am creating has one of the highest Lithium Polymer (LiPo) power densities commercially available and is integrated with the motor, controller, and battery management system to provide safe, reliable operation.Electric power can work well using a PSA with today's technology. If properly designed, it should provide an endurance of more than one hour. Those who want to fly farther and faster could couple the electric motor with a small four-stroke aircraft engine for a viable hybrid.FAA is pondering a regulatory approach to electric propulsion but Experimental Amateur Built rules allow customers to build whatever they want. With a simple design and modern construction methods of matched-hole and jig-less assembly build time can be measured in weeks not years.Britain's CAA published a revised SSDR (Single-Seat Deregulated) rule that allows the sale of a finished single seat aircraft up to 315 kilograms (693 pounds) gross weight when equipped with an airframe parachute and a reasonable maximum stall speed of 35 knots (40 mph). This is a perfect PSA rule which I hope will spread to other countries. The future may reward development of viable electric and four-stroke power systems and single seat airframes with modern construction and ramp appeal. Let's call them Personal Sport Aircraft. For more information contact Chip about his new aircraft through his business, Aeromarine LSA.http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. The Sky Arrow from Hansen Air Group has often been used to train Able Flight Scholarship students. No, this article is not about an established flight school operation. Nor is it about a university training program, or some government flight training facility. I'm simply impressed that Charles Stites and his Able Flight nonprofit organization have brought so many new pilots into the fold. For this alone, he deserves applause.Add that he exclusively helps persons with disabilities and you have something noteworthy. Here's a contrast... At the AOPA Summit, a group of leaders will meet to discuss ways to reverse the depressing 70% drop-out rate of flight school students. On the other side of the compass, "Able Flight achieves a very impressive completion rate of at least 72% for recipients of its full scholarships," revealed Stites, who founded the organization in 2006. Able Flight didn't set up shop to be a major flight school.Yet hear this: "We've awarded a total of 30 scholarships as of September, 2011, and 24 are full scholarships that can lead to a license. Of those 14 are already licensed pilots, three are in training, three are yet to begin, and only four have dropped out."How does Able Flight do it? "It's not that their training is easier," explained Charles. "If anything, it's more physically demanding for a paraplegic or a person who has lost a limb. Our students never get a break meeting the same Sport Pilot Practical Test Standards that all applicants must complete." To some extent, the Able Flight advantage is matter of personnel management. "Able Flight student pilots know they are being matched with good flight instructors at schools that care about their success."In addition, Able Flight has assembled a cadre of people students can ask for extra assistance. "In short, each student is backed by people who want them to succeed. Now, is that so hard?" Evidently it is hard or we would not have a 70% drop-out rate at conventional flight schools. I'd say the AOPA roundtable attendees have their work cut out for them. They could do worse than to study the success story known as Able Flight. Kudos to Charles, his financial and other backers, but most of the credit stays with instructors who care and highly motivated students, who repeatedly prove that someone with sufficient determination can accomplish almost anything.http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. These LSA-only events offer a more intimate setting where you can speak at length with an aircraft or other product representative. They don't offer the dense traffic of the big shows but the valued trade off is that nearly everyone who shows is interested. People came from as far as California and I witnessed many demo flights. The Mt. Vernon airport is as good as it gets for this purpose with easy access to big broad runways and plenty of open airspace. Lead by energetic Chris Collins, a team of volunteers made it work again. When the event isn't swallowing all their time these folks have a little fun.Sportair sells variations called Savage Cub, Bobber, and Cruiser but it was the Titan Stroker 180-horsepower Savage Cub-S that really raised the red flag for the name owner, perhaps as Cub-S is only $128,000, tens of thousands less than some other Cubalikes!Looking all bush, Cub-S — as it shall be known for a short time — is capable of landing on a creek bed or a lumpy turf field. Bush capability on Light-Sport Aircraft is more available thanks to new product releases. At the Midwest LSA Expo, RANS displayed their S-20 Raven on big tundra tires (video coming) as did Just Aircraft and Aerotrek. The Indiana company that sells the affordable A240 trigear and A220 taildragger — with a list price of $88,950 — can now be ordered with large tundra tires and this is on a nose-dragger. Nearly always such bush capability comes on a taildragger which configuration is not right for everyone. Insurance companies know tailwheel training is less common than it was many years ago and therefore getting coverage may require more training or experience. With the A240 in tundra tires for the same low price, you can have bush capability without a large investment.Just Aircraft just can't sit still on their SuperSTOL. The airplane is selling briskly and chief designer Troy Woodland keeps improving this amazing aerial animal. It's already a fascinating airplane to watch make incredibly short takeoffs and even shorter landings. Now, it will have even more control at its crawling approach speed because Troy added spoilers to the wings (arrow), joining movable slats, vortex generators, tip plates, and large-volume flaps. For a super-short-field performer like SuperSTOL, this may prove a compelling idea and one more reason to consider this intriguing design. Just Aircraft has sold more than 500 kits and is going strong ... no wonder with this steady development work they're doing.Rotax largely owns the LSA space so far as powerplants go at somewhere around 80% market share. Of course, Continental is never to be counted out with their O-200 series that lifts many airplanes including the new batch of "LSA 4.0" GA-like aircraft and Jabiru also serves both LSA and homebuilt fleets (the latter with no less than seven firewall forward packages). "This was my best birthday present. All went well with no surprises," reported an excited Anssi Rekual, sales manager and front man for the Finland-based builder of the LSA seaplane called Atol. An airline pilot today, Anssi added, "I have only one year to go with Finnair and then I can focus fully on Atol."The head of design and company CEO, Markku Koivurova flew for 26 minutes and reported that aircraft was easy and convenient to fly and everything worked normally. Approach to stall and slow flight characteristics were tested on Atol registered in Finland as OH-XNA followed by a perfect landing. Markku flew at Rovaniemi international airport (EFRO) at the Arctic Circle.Speaking on behalf of the Atol team, Anssi was relating news that the reborn Atol took its maiden flight on Tuesday, April 9, 2015, just in time for the company to have significant bragging rights at the German Aero Friedrichshafen show.Congratulations to Anssi and his team from Atol Aviation, Ltd.! Earlier Atol completed its water testing without taking flight.I use the term "reborn" because Atol is not a new design, unlike several other exiting new LSA seaplanes in various stages of development. In 1984, designer Markku Koivurova started development of Atol, then a wood composite amphibious aircraft. The original model's first flight happened 27 years ago in August of 1988 in Rovaniemi, Finland. The first flight on water was achieved a few months later off nearby Lake Norvajärvi on October 20th.Martekno Finland, Ltd., began production of the original model in 1990 and the first deliveries were made in 1991.Leap forward twenty years to 2011, Atol AvionAtol Avion, Ltd., was established. Anssi explained, "I contacted Markku then and talked him into restarting the business. It took four years to complete the design changes, build a prototype and redo all drawings after completing fresh calculations needed for certificates." He explained that Atol Avion is a small group with modest funding. "We have on average three hired staff and mostly just our own savings to use."The refreshed group began building a new prototype with a longer fuselage and numerous other changes. "The manufacturing technology of the structure and systems and the level of aircraft finish has been further improved," Anssi related. "Design of the engine cowling and fuselage extension has been refined. The nose, canopy and upper fuselage are redesigned for optimal aerodynamics and to reduce twirling in the tail." Admirably, and despite all the recent changes made to the refreshed design, Atol Avion promised to continue to support Atol aircraft manufactured by the first Martekno organization. That pioneering Atol model was and is sold in Europe as a ultralight or microlight kit with a gross weight of 495 kilograms or 1,090 pounds. Now conforming to the ASTM standards using the 1,430 pound (650 kg) weight for seaplanes, Anssi said, "Our Atol 650 LSA is converted from Markku's original by extending the fuselage by a meter and redesigning cockpit area and engine installation. Basic material is still wood composite but fibers, including carbon fiber, has been used also and all details have been updated."Atol Avion reports that they have also sold three planes and will deliver those to clients this summer. "We have also confirmed a financial program that enables us to now totally focus on assembly," Anssi wrote. Tapping into modern social media methods, he continued, "We are opening a crowdfunding process to finance our production, so all aviators and wannabes can buy a share or two of Atol Avion, Ltd." He said the company will add more about the fund raising effort on their homepage soon!By Dan Johnsonhttp://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. With a solid heritage BushCat by SkyReach is fun, capable, and available as a kit, fully-built SLSA or ELSA.More than just an affordably priced airplane, BushCat adds value in through its versatility. The very tough and light Dacron-Trilam fabric covered aircraft (with no paint weight penalty) is available in tailwheel or nosewheel format, offers a roomy cabin that is 47.5-inches wide (8 inches wider than a Cessna 172!), and offers an excellent useful payload of up to 670 pounds resulting in a generous 520 pound payload with full fuel (24.8 gallons).Additional features include sprung aluminum landing gear, hydraulic brakes, dual controls via a central stick, dual rudder pedals, pitch trim, and unique dual throttles at the end of each outside armrest that fold up out of your way for entry/exit. Plus, everyone can enjoy BushCat’s wide-open visibility. For those seeking water capability, AeroSport offers the amphibian BushCat that continues the low purchase prices of SkyReach with ease of maintenance and low operating costs.AeroSport, LLCBushCat is represented in the U.S. by AeroSport, distributor for SkyReach (Pty) Ltd., a company previously known to readers as Rainbow Aircraft, maker of the Cheetah. When SkyReach took over and professionalized the organization and marketing, they rebranded the aircraft as BushCat. They also made a series of positive improvements to an airplane that flew well and had singular features.AeroSport represents BushCat from southeastern Wisconsin, offering a central location. AeroSport’s hanger and maintenance facility is located two miles north of Galt Airport (10C) on a private grass airstrip. Conveniently, this location has an available guest house for weekend demo flights or build assisted assembly projects. AeroSport is operated by Daniela F. Knoll (president) and Jeremy R. Knoll.Working with SkyReach, the Knolls are bringing the promise of Light-Sport Aircraft that everyone expected in 2004 when FAA released the rule: they are supplying an affordable aircraft for less than $50,000 (though prices change; please contact AeroSport for the latest information). Such a modest price is actually less than anyone expected ten years ago.For that low cost you get a ready-to-fly airplane powered by the ASTM-compliant Rotax 582 engine. If you prefer a four stroke Rotax 912, the price is still only a bit over $60,000, a price equivalent to $50,000 in 2004. Yes, you can afford BushCat. The 51% airframe kit sells for a little over $20,000 and you can choose a powerplant to find total savings of half to a third of the fully manufactured price. If you are seeking an affordable LSA that will give years of enjoyment without busting your budget, BushCat by SkyReach may be your flying machine.http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. At Sun N Fun 2015 Kamron Blevins introduced his newly designed Maverick II Legend. The Maverick has been extended. This allows for storage behind the seat. Kamron indicated there is enough room "to put a sleeping bag, small tent or three gallon gas can".The five gallon gas tank on the Maverick has also been redesigned, this allows "for installation of a BRS parachute closer to the center of gravity of the trike". This area is also enclosed which protects it from the elements, which would allow the installation of a soft pack parachute, which weighs and cost less.According the Karon, "a stock Maverick makes the weight". Meaning it is compliant with Part 103, where a pilot does not need a license to fly, does not need a medical, and does not require registration. The Maverick Legend II also has a new leaf spring suspension system. Which is lighter than the older suspension. The new suspension is cleaner, with less drag, giving the trike better fuel consumption in flight. With the assistance of a small lifting jack, Kamron demonstrated how the Maverick landing gear can fold, with just the removal of bolts. Once folded it easily fits into the back of a standard size pickup truck, or van. Another unique feature is that each gear has a small wheel located on the end of it, allowing it to be easily rolled around if necessary. All of the modifications that have been done to the new Maverick Legend II are available to owners if they want to update. The Maverick Legend II uses a 440 Kawasaki with a belt drive reduction system. The engine has both a pull start and is available with an electric start as an option. With the five gallon fuel tank a pilot has just under two hours of flight time. If he carries a three gallon fuel can in the storage compartment this can be extended to three hours. The Maverick Legend II on display in Paradise City, with electric start, a 440 Kawasaki engine, an EIS panel, ready to fly sells for less than $20,000.NorthWing has been in business for over 19 years, has over 400 trikes flying and has sold over 3,000 "wings". How "3,000 wings"? NorthWing not only builds weight trikes it also builds hang gliders for the hang glider industry and trike wings for many of the major manufacturers.http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. This sleek amphibious biplane is manufactured in Brazil. The Super Petrel is being imported and distributed in the United States by Brian Boucher from Florida Lightsport Aviation located in the Daytona Beach area. The 1st Super Petrel LS, which has already passed the Brazilian LSA standards which are very similar to the US standards, arrived in the US just before The US Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring, Florida. Unfortunately enough hours hadn't been flown on the aircraft to allow it to make the trip to Sebring.Since Sebring Brian has flown the Super Petrel over 50 hours, and so was able to fly the aircraft over to Sun and Fun. While the 1st Super Petrel has been registered as an experimental aircraft and FAA audit has been scheduled for June of 2013 so that future Super Petrel's will be available as ready to fly light sport aircraftThe craft features side-by-side seating in a 45 inch cabin, in a pusher configuration, it has a steerable nosewheel with a center mounted brake handle.Brian reports "that the craft has probably 10 times as many water landings as it does on hard surface runways." "my partner who takes off from Spruce Creek had so regularly heading for local lakes where he must take off and land for 2 or 3 hours on water before heading back to Spruce Creek."Because the Super Petrel LS is a biplane, with a very short wingspan of only 28 feet, it is very easy to maneuver when coming in and out of the water, or for docking. Brian reports " it is a very simple aircraft to fly, it is very stable, has no flaps, and uses a single lever manual retract system."It uses a standard stick and rudder control system with dual sticks, dual rudder pedals and a center mounted throttle. The retract lever is also centrally located between the 2 seats. The Super Petrel LS is powered by the Rotax 912 100 hp engine and takes off from water in 8 to 10 seconds. When equipped with the Rotax 914 it can get off the water in his little as 5 seconds! This quick takeoff can be attributed to the use of 2 wings. Initially the lower wing provides a ground effect cushion during the takeoff run, then when ready to lift off the top wing, which is at a different angle of attack takes over.Cruise at 5200 RPM on the Rotax 912 ULS comes in at just over 100 miles per hour. Stall is very uneventful with the aircraft basically just mushing. For landing an approach speed of about 65 mph is used.Edra Aeronáutica has been in operation for over 20 years and there are over 300 Petrel aircraft are flying worldwide.http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. A number of problems face manufacturers trying to build a Part 103 ultralight aircraft. That is an aircraft that meets the definition of Part 103 that can be flown without a medical, without registration or a license in the U.S.One of those is that the manufacturer Rotax, that supplied roughly 80% of the engines used on ultralight aircraft no longer produces a lightweight two stroke engine. Gone are they Rotax 277, 377, 447 and 503 leaving only the Rotax 582, 65 HP, liquid cooled two stroke. This has forced manufacturers to look for alternative power plants, or in some cases go back 30 years to engines that are still available like the Kawaski 340 and 440. But one manufacturer that has stepped up to the plate, or rather one distributor of engines that has stepped up to the plate to help fill the void is that of Recreational Power distributor of the Hirth line of engines in the U.S.For years Matt Dandar owner of Rec Power has been providing sales, service and warranty for the Hirth line of aircraft engines. He has also had his finger on the pulse of the industry and seems to always be one step ahead of the game when it comes to filling "niche markets."Among this "niche markets" has been a motor mount system to allow the Hirth line of engines to be mounted on the Challenger line of aircraft, another a belt drive system for Hirth engines. Matt has also worked closely with Hirth to come out with a single cylinder 28 hp two stroke engine with electric start and a charging system for part 103 ultralights. In fact if you check out most of the major producers of true legal ultralight aircraft you will more than likely see the F 33 either pulling or pushing it along. But some manufacturers need more power to accommodate larger pilots or to allow their ultralight aircraft to fly on floats. One of those dealers/distributors was Andy Humphrey. Andy has worked closely with Matt over the years as a Challenger dealer equipping his aircraft with Hirth engines. This year Andy became a Quicksilver dealer and that allowed him to work with Matt on a project that Matt and Quicksilver have been working on for several years, the installation of a two cylinder, 50 HP, F 23 twin cylinder opposed aircraft engine, on a single seat Quicksilver Sprint part 103 legal ultralight. With the ability to mount the F23, with a weight of only 71 lbs., on the Sprint it makes a part 103 legal ultralight WITHOUT having to use the parachute allowance. To get the engine to work required the removal of the cylinders and them 180 degrees. Which also requires the pistons to be turned. This allows the carbs to be located on the top of the engine, and puts the exhausts down under the engine. With that done Andy them went about shortening the root tube on the Sprint and building a motor mount. He was aided by knowledge he obtained during the installation of the same engine on a Kolb Firefly.Andy indicates that he "is very excited about this engine installation, as it now allows the sale of a legal part 103 ultralight with an engine designed for aircraft application, with dual ignition and a reduction drive". Which means owners now have warranty and parts and service are available.http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. The REV (by REVO Evolution Trikes) is a single seat part 103 legal trike, that has a number of unique features. But the most interesting is that it can go from flying to be folded ready to roll into a trailer by one person in as little at six minutes, with no special tools, and without breaking your back! And then do the same to go back flying. It is so simple that an eight year old could do it and did!The standard engine on the REV is a Kawasaki 440, and Larry indicates he is also looking "at some electric propulsion systems". The REV comes in at the maximum legal weight for a part 103 ultralight, and can be equipped with big tundra ties if equipped with a parachute. At the time of writing Sun N Fun 2015 the starting price of the REV, ready to fly was just under $18,000.http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. Under the motto "Electrical, Ecological, Evolutionary“, it will present the current state of electric-based sustainable and future-oriented technologies. The e-flight-expo, organised in co-operation with Flying Pages GmbH, was once again, a major section at AERO Friedrichshafen. As in other industries, electro mobility continues to gain in importance in the aviation sector as well. In order to better meet future sustainability requirements in aviation, alternative methods of propulsion are indispensable.Electric motors represent an alternative to conventional propulsion systems.Electric flight aims at getting away from increasingly expensive fossil fuels, at reducing environmental pollution and at minimizing noise. The 'e' in e-flight stands for ecological, electrical, evolutionary, to promote ecological sustainability and progress in aviation. In addition to the e-flight expo special exhibition, there was dedicated e-flight lectures at AERO Friedrichshafen. As part of the AERO Conferences, high-calibre speakers talked about the history and development of electric flight.http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine. The REV (by REVO) is a single seat part 103 legal trike, that has a number of unique features. But the most interesting is that it can go from flying to be folded ready to roll into a trailer by one person in as little at six minutes, with no special tools, and without breaking your back! And then do the same to go back flying. It is so simple that an eight year old could do it and did! When folded it can be moved easily on the plug in "dolly cart". The mast used on the REV is a "complete tri-angulated solid structure as does not fold." When folded the wheels and suspension act as a counter balance for the trike, which means that to lifting the trike only requires a 40 lbs. lifting force to start and then becomes weightless as the unit is lifted.Larry took the time to demonstrate how the trike goes from trailer to flying condition, using the unit on display. While understanding that Larry knew exactly how and what he was doing, on video it took him less than five minutes to do!After Larry had removed the wing supports used for storage, and the "wing booties", he simply pushed the single surfaced wing forward, (single surface for easy of set up), which unfolded it. He then installed the battens which had small bendable tips that allowed easy installation.Larry indicated that the single surface wing "has little haul back tension, which is one of the problems if you were using a high performance wing." The REV also uses few battens which again makes for an easier and faster set up.During the procedure he stopped several times to demonstrate points such as the effort needed to start the lift, and how when the weight started to transfer their was indeed no effort required to lift anything! The REV is designed to fly in the "low 40 mph range, with a top speed in the high 50's." The reason - because the REV does not have or use a windshield. After installation of the battens Larry then pulled on a strap in the center of the wing and locked it in place which set the "haul back tension."He then clipped in the "flip tips" to secure the battens, pulled what looked like a compression strut back into place and secured it "which supports the trailing edge of the wing for pitch stability". And locked in the washout strut at the end of the wing, with the last thing, he then installed the specially designed tip batten which has a spring loaded center that folds and then, locks into place - the wing was finished. He then unclipped the front section of the trike from where locks into the frame. He then installed the nose cone center panel of the wing. He then grabbed the control bar, with no effort at all lifted it and then let go and the unit sat there, weightless with the control bar at chest level. (If 40 lbs is still to much effort an extension handle can be plugged in to give even more leverage.)He then removed two "speed pins" grabbed the front wheel suspension system and plugged it in and then reinstalled the pins. All the while with the trike sitting effortlessly on its storage cart!He then reinstalled the throttle cable onto the nosewheel throttle assembly. Then one plug is used to disconnect and reconnect all of the electrical system. Two pins then removed from the control bar, which releases it, and three pins are removed from the dolly where it is connected to the airframe, which allows removal of the cart! From start to finish on video just over 5 minutes.http://www.sportaviationmagazine.com Video and Audio content is Copyright © Sport Aviation Magazine.
