Les Elgart and His Orchestra - Together
"They say that the eyes of some paintings can follow you around the room, a fact that I doubt, but I am wondering whether some music can follow you for ever."― Terry Pratchett ▼▼▼LES ELGARTLes Elgart was an American swing jazz bandleader and trumpeter.Lester E. (Les) Elgart began playing trumpet as a teenager, and by age 20 had landed professional gigs. In the 1940s he played in bands led by Raymond Scott, Charlie Spivak, and Harry James, and occasionally found himself in bands alongside brother Larry. Together they put together their own Les & Larry Elgart Ensemble in 1945, hiring Nelson Riddle, Ralph Flanagan, and Bill Finegan to do arrangements. The union was short-lived, however, due to the waning of swing jazz's popularity. In 1952, the pair reunited and released a substantial number of albums on Columbia Records, many to considerable sales success. Among their better-known tunes is "Bandstand Boogie", which was used by Dick Clark as the theme song for American Bandstand. Later in the 1950s Les moved away from performing to handling the band's business end, and had essentially stopped performing by the end of the decade. In 1963, the pair reunited, hiring arrangers like Charles Albertine and Bobby Scott for material that tended more toward the contemporary easy listening sound.TOGETHER"Together" is a 1928 popular song with music by Ray Henderson and lyrics by Buddy DeSylva and Lew Brown. The most popular 1928 recording of the song, by Paul Whiteman, with Bix Beiderbecke on cornet, was a #1 hit for several weeks. The song was included in a 1944 movie, SinceYou Went Away. This gave rise to a revival of the song, and it was recorded by Dick Haymes and Helen Forrest in a duet. Their recording was released by Decca Records. It first reached the Billboard magazine Best Seller chart on October 5, 1944 and lasted 10 weeks on the chart. This recording was paired on a single with ItHad to be you " thus producing a big two sided hit.MHOA superbly fitting arrangement for the typical "Elgart sound" consisting of crisp and bright saxophones, magically combined with the other brass instruments of the band. The Elgarts - with the help of some of the finest arrangers in the business - succeeded in creating a recognizable sound, a sound that would separate them from many other big bands of the time, thus bringing them considerable success and a respectable sales figure as far as their recording albums were concerned.Enjoy this "big band brilliance" :) !
