Officer Sotnikov and Private Rybak are sent from the forest into a village to acquire food for the partisans, whose ranks include women and children. They are chased down by the Germans. The physically frail Sotnikov withstands torture and accepts death by execution. But Rybak, on his knees, begging for mercy, agrees to work for the Germans as a policeman.
