The creation of this particular spot wasn't natural at all but its amazing and inexplicable composition is. In 1971, Soviet geologists accidentally discovered a cave filled with natural gas when the ground beneath their oil rig collapsed, uncovering it. In order to protect the locals and prevent intoxication from poisonous gas, the geologists decided it best to light the gas on fire and burn it away.
