SUMMERTIME ~ JONI MITCHELL HERBIE HANCOCK AND STEVIE WONDER ~ SUMMERTIME ON THE GULFCOAST
"Summertime" is an aria composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward, the author of the novel Porgy on which the opera was based. The song soon became a popular and much recorded jazz standard, described as "without doubt... one of the finest songs the composer ever wrote....Gershwin's highly evocative writing brilliantly mixes elements of jazz and the song styles of blacks in the southeast United States from the early twentieth century. In September 1936, a recording by Billie Holiday was the first to hit the national pop charts, reaching # 12.[3] Other notable recordings include those by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald in 1957; Sam Cooke in 1961; and Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company on the 1968 album Cheap Thrills. The most commercially successful version was by Billy Stewart, who reached # 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966.I am unable to be online very much these days and I look forward to being back in touch with some very special folks I have met along the way...this is my way of sending some long overdue hellos and hugs to each of you..This is some video my sister, Amy captured on Pensacola Beach and the photographs were taken by our dear friend, June...I put their great images together with this great classic song...guess that makes me the amateur videographer...all I know is I enjoy experimenting with the magic of movie maker. This is also a celebration of life for the moment as the waters appear clear and beautiful...and, there seems to be signs of life in the water and on the shore..for that I am deeply thankful. Will be updating this information over the next couple of days.LYRICS:Summertime,And the livin' is easyFish are jumpin'And the cotton is highOh, Your daddy's richAnd your mamma's good lookin'So hush little babyDon't you cryOne of these morningsYou're going to rise up singingThen you'll spread your wingsAnd you'll take to the skyBut until that morningThere's a'nothing can harm youWith your daddy and mammy standing bySummertime,And the livin' is easyFish are jumpin'And the cotton is highYour daddy's richAnd your mamma's good lookin'So hush little babyDon't you cry
