Verdi's ill-fated Il Corsaro, with libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, was based on Lord Byron's poem "The Corsair." The first performance was at the Teatro Grande in Trieste, 1848, and was a pretty dismal failure. It quickly passed out of the repertoire, in spite of some lovely music, an example of which we hear in "Non so le tetre immagini."
