Ian could play amazing stuff but not get in the way. Sometimes you get a drummer who can play a great solo but somehow takes over the whole band. Ian played with great sympathy but you’d say ‘Wow, where did that come from?’ He had a photographic memory and always knew where the choruses ended. We’d all turn round to Ian to find out where we were in the tune. I remember once saying to him ‘What key are we in?’ And he shouted back ‘You’re asking me what key it’s in and I’m the drummer? It’s in G!’
