    Almaty – the biggest metropolitan city of Kazakhstan will host the Winter World University Games in 2017. Official decision on providing Almaty with the right to host the 28th Universiade was made at a session of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) on November 29, 2011.The World University Games in Almaty will be another step to enhance Kazakhstan’s international prestige as outlined in the Strategic Development Plan of Kazakhstan till 2030 approved by President N.Nazarbayev.Almaty has essential experience in hosting international sport competitions. The 7th Asian Games were one the biggest sport events held in Almaty. All sport facilities built for the Asian Games will serve as a basis for preparation of infrastructure for the Universiade 2017.In particular, the International Ski Jump Complex “Sunkar”, B.Sholak Palace of Sports and the Ski Biathlon Stadium in Almaty region will be hosting the University Games. Besides, the world famous high-mountain skating rink “Medeu” and “Shymbulak” ski resort will welcome the participants of the Games as well. Moreover, new facilities including the Ice Palace, Ice Arena and the athletic village will be built.Eight core sports will be contested at the Games 2017 – figure skating, short track, alpine skiing, snowboarding, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ice hockey, curling as well as four optional sports that the host country may include in the program. Thus, the Kazakh side suggested ski jumping, jumping race, speed skating and freestyle. About 3 thousand volunteers will help to host the Games in Almaty. Presently, the master plan and the concept of the Games have been developed and submitted for consideration of the FISU.The Kazakh national student team takes part in the World University Games since 1993. Totally, 228 Kazakhstani students participated in the Games. Our athletes won 28 medals (11 gold, 5 silver and 12 bronze).
