Про их выступление вообще легенды ходили, — и что они опоздали на час, сдвинув следующих выступающих — Эмерсон, Лэйк & Палмер — куда-то в ночь, и что когда Блэкмора окончательно достал видеооператор, он кинул в него гитарой, и попал по камере, и что в конце выступления у них взорвался усилитель и чуть не сжёг всю сцену, и что после окончания концерта, спасаясь от злых пожарников и секьюрити, ребятам пришлось удирать на вертолёте... Качество видеосьёмки вполне пригодное, ибо снимали, как я понял, на Super 8, а это дело по качеству на порядок лучше VHS. Если, конечно, аккуратно оцифровать... К сожалению, только Дипапыл снимали полностью. Но хоть старались. Было построено несколько вышек для камер, и был установлен даже операторский кран, на конце которого на том месте, где должна была быть камера, сидел целый оператор... И ещё порадовало место выступления: Онтарио, Калифорния. Я долго врубался, Онтарио это или всё же Калифорния .Вариант концерта с аудиокомментариями очень информативен, но отсутствие субтитров не порадует русских добряков.И не забудьте купить диск, если было в кайф, оуйе.Booklet infoIn many ways, the California Jam was the equivalent of the Woodstock festival to a burgeoning generation of hard rock and heavy metal fans. Woodstock had changed the face of music in 1969; the California Jam took place five years later down the line. During that time, flower-power had wilted and peace-and-love hippy ideals had been replaced by a culture of wildeyed excess. The California Jam was big, brash and over-the-top, and its line-up of bands was mouth-watering. But whereas Woodstock fans’ thirst would likely have been quenched by dainty sips of herbal tea, the Jam was all about guzzling flagons of foaming Budweiser.In the battle between wholesome vegetarian nut roasts and aorta-clogging triple cheeseburgers, there was only ever going to be one winner.The phenomenon now known as Arena Rock was born at the California Jam - and Deep Purple were at its epicentre.The Jam took place at the Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario, California on a hot and sunny spring day on April 6, ‘74. The full bill was as follows: Rare Earth; Earth, Wind & Fire; The Eagles; Seals & Crofts; Black Oak Arkansas; Black Sabbath; Deep Purple; Emerson Lake & Palmer.The event attracted an enormous crowd of a quarter-million people and represented a baptism of fire - in more ways than one - for Purple’s ‘new boys’, frontman David Coverdale and bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes, who in ‘73 had replaced Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, respectively, to usher in the band’s so-called Mk III line-up.“Purple were actually on fire back then,” recalls Hughes today. “It was the first stadium tour for me and David, and wed already done maybe 10 shows prior to the California Jam on that tour. We did the Orange Bowl in Miami, the Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City... big, big venues. And the California Jam, of course, was really huge. Pretty much the entire California Jam show was about great songs, great bands, great singers - and it culminated with some great entertainment from [Purple guitarist] Ritchie Blackmore.” We’ll get to that “entertainment” from the Man In Black shortly. But first, the eagle-eyed among you must have spotted that Purple didn’t actually close the California Jam show. That honour went to Emerson, Lake & Palmer. So what happened? Were ELP in fact the headliners?“Absolutely not” counters Hughes. 7 want to make this clear - Purple were the headliners. A few months before the show we added ELP to bring some more people in. But we wanted to go on at sundown; we chose not to go on last.”Blackmore was particularly insistent that Purple had a “sundown clause” inserted in to their contract.In fact, the day before the California Jam show, David Coverdale spotted Blackmore on the balcony of his hotel room looking at his watch. The guitarist was waiting for the sun to disappear from view, so he could pinpoint the exact time when Purple should take to the stage.“But it all went wrong on the actual day,” the singer chuckles. “For the first time in the history of rock festivals, the California Jam was running ahead of schedule. The organisers wanted us to go on stage earlier than expected. Purple had just arrived at the festival site, I was actually just pouring myself a scotch and coke, and somebody came into the trailer and said: ‘You’re on!’ It was 45 minutes ahead of schedule.”Blackmore was so incensed, he locked himself in his backstage caravan and refused to come out.“Ritchie didn’t want to go on until the contracted time and he was absolutely correct,” says Coverdale. “But we were threatened with never working in America again. Someone said: ‘Do you know who’s behind all this?’ There was some inference that the Mafia was involved. It was pretty chilling.”“I just remember all this screaming and yelling backstage,” says Hughes. “The organisers were telling us to get onstage immediately because of security reasons. The fire marshal and Dick Clark over at ABC, who were filming the event, were going to sue us because there was going to be a riot. Ritchie had locked the door of his trailer; they had to break in to get him out of there. So, yes, we did eventually go onstage when it was daylight but it started to go dark about halfway through the set. The aggravation obviously fired us up, gave a bit of an edge to it.”Hughes is right. The backstage argy-bargy added copious amounts of fire and fury to Purple’s performance... no wonder their opening song was Burn. At the climax of the show, a still-furious Blackmore trashed several of his guitars and chucked his amplifiers off the edge of the stage. Blackmore also struck one of the ABC cameras with his guitar. Says Hughes: “The director and the cameraman were urging him to strike a pose for the lens, and Ritchie just wouldn't. That's what triggered him off. The cameraman got what he was asking for."The chaos continued when a massive on-stage detonation created an out-of-con-trol fireball - pun most definitely intended. “There was too much explosive," agrees Coverdale. “It looked great, I agree, but it singed Ritchie. He got burned, Paicey [drummer Ian Paice] got burned, some of the crew got burned."In the midst of all this mayhem there was also some awesome music being created. Purple’s set focused strongly on their then-current Burn album, the first by the Mk III line-up. They only included a handful of songs from the previous Mk II era. “...and we kind of reinvented them," says Hughes. “Purple had afree-form approach to music back then, in common with many other 1970s bands. We used to change things on a nightly basis. We would just jam and jam, and those Mk II songs would be the focus of the jamming."Beginning with the aforementioned Burn, Purple’s full California Jam set-list panned out as follows: Might Just Take Your Life; Lay Down, Stay Down; Mistreated; Smoke On The Water; You Fool No One (including excerpts of Lazy and The Mule); and finally Space Truckin’ (including an instrumental jam broadly based around the Mk I song, Mandrake Root).When Purple put their California Jam set together, it was a conscious decision to focus on the present and future of the band, and not the past. “Absolutely," says Hughes. “I just wish we'd done Sail Away as well, that we'd thrown that one into the mix. There's only seven or eight songs on Burn, as you know, and one of them was an instrumental, 'A’ 200. The other song we didn’t play was What’s Goin’ On Here. I suppose we could actually have done the whole of that record. We were actually touring Burn at the time, we didn't have Stormbringer [the follow-up to the Burn album] recorded yet, so we only had a certain amount of songs to play from that Mk III era. But yeah, we were definitely looking towards the future at that time."Even in 2016, Glenn Hughes has very vivid memories of Deep Purples tempestuous California Jam performance. “This was when the world was fresh, things were rosy and fantastic, and I was drinking lemonade," he smiles. “It was a moment in time for us all. It was a great statement of what rock was all about in that pre-MTVera. Its also a great testament to the Mk III line-up.
