Manfred Mann's Earth Band - 1973 BBC in Concert
Manfred Mann's Earth BandGolders Green Hippodrome, London, England, recorded for BBC Sight And Sound In Concert, Nov 20, 1973.If you have never had the opportunity to see the Earth Band play live, this is an eye-opener. Launched after the breakup of the pop group Manfred Mann, the new quartet of Mann, singer-guitarist Mick Rogers, bassist Colin Pattenden and drummer Chris Slade play heavy prog rock very unlike their best known 1977 international hit, Blinded By The Light. For this slightly under an hour BBC concert, Mann opened with his trademark Moog sound, jamming on Mercury, The Winged Messenger then launching into Buddah to establish his “serious muso” credibility. You get to hear a great guitar solo from Rogers on Messin’. You just won’t hear riffs played like this in today’s shows. Even when they play the old Manfred Mann pop hit, The Mighty Quinn, the Earth Band are determined to steer away from the melody preferring to stomp it to the ground.00:00 Mercury, The Winged Messenger 3:2903:29 Buddah 10:5014:19 Messin’ 10:1624:35 Medley: Father Of Day ~ Captain Bobby Stout 18:2943:04 The Mighty Quinn 8:02Mick Rogers - guitar, vocalsManfred Mann - organ, synthesizer, vocalsColin Pattenden - bassChris Slade - drums.
