China's very first cargo spacecraft on Saturday successfully completed its first docking with the orbiting Tiangong-2 space lab. It's one of the three dockings planned for Tianzhou-1 to check and prove its versatile dockability with remote human control and without.In-orbit refueling follows the first docking which is a chase-to-dock. Unlike refueling on ground, in-orbit refueling takes several days for each injection.When Tianzhou-1 parts with Tiangong-2 after refueling, the space lab makes a 180-degree turnaround in orbit. The cargo spacecraft should automatically speed up its flight to overtake the space lab and then waits to dock the space lab for a second time.Tianzhou-1 is finally to conduct a fully automatic docking with the space lab, that is to say, it docks with the space lab all on its own, without the human controls from the Earth.This computerized automatic docking will be another historic first for the Chinese space program. While reducing the time for approaching and docking from human-controlled 48 hours to computer-controlled 6 hours, the automatic docking technology not only relieves human controllers of their exacting exertions, it also shortens the intervals of dockings to allow fast and frequent dockings to refuel and replenish China's planned space station in future.Measuring 10.6 meters in length and 3.35 meters in diameter, Tianzhou-1 can ferry up to 6 tons of supplies between Earth and space.Tianzhou-1 is scheduled to stay in space for about six months to conduct some extra experiments.
